Galerie Zygos
ΓΚΑΛΕΡΙ ΖΥΓΟΣ
Galerie Zygos was founded in 1956 by Frantzis Frantzeskakis and his wife Catherine as the first professionally organized fine arts gallery of Greece. Galerie Zygos has been an authority on contemporary Greek art, and was instrumental in the establishment of important Greek artists such as:
Yannis Gaitis,
Alekos Fassianos,
Dimitris Mytaras,
Christos Caras,
and many many others.
We will also mention the first exhibition in Greece of works by Picasso, the International Poster Exhibition, the first show of Yannis Tsarouhis upon his return from Paris, the Bouzianis exhibition 20 years after his death, two post-mortem shows of works by Agenor Asteriades, the great exhibition of engraver Nikolaos Ventouras, etc.
In 2002 the gallery came under the direction of Ion Frantzeskakis. True to our history, Galerie Zygos kept selecting and exhibiting the work of established but also of younger talented artists. The gallery believed in searching for and promoting the work of artists whose work is identified by its quality and aesthetics and not ephemeral trends and styles where the sole criterion is the context itself. As of April 2009 Galerie Zygos has suspended its exhibition schedule and is operating sans space as an art dealership until further notice.
The inaugural group show, with which Galerie Zygos launched its new period of operation in 2002, included artists from the very first period of Zygos’ life, such as painters Christos Caras and Panayotis Tetsis, and artists from the long period of Iofontos Street, such as mosaicist Pelagia Angelopoulou, sculptors Amalia Vamvakou, Kostas Dikefalos, Roza Eliou and Thodoros Papayannis, engravers Panayotis Gravalos and Eleni Economidou, and painters Gerasimos Dionatos, Sarandis Karavousis, Kostas Karnavas, Nikos Kourouniotis, Lakeridou, Katie Mavrommati,
Manolis Polymeris, Aristotelis Solounias and Anna Christeli. Also participating were American artists Leslie Abrahams and Laurence Bach, as well as first-time participants Eufrosyni Doxiades, George Koumouros, Alekos Levidis and Syni Papayanni.
